But there is one thing that makes sunflower seeds unique—they’re happiest growing in a tray, not a jar.
While most sprouting varieties do just fine in a standard sprouting jar, sunflowers really thrive when given a little room to stretch out in a shallow tray with a growing medium. Good choices include either potting soil, or a soilless option like a hemp or silicone mat.
Prefer to skip the soil? A soilless growing medium, like a hemp mat or reusable silicone mat, gives sunflower sprouts a clean, tidy environment that’s just as effective and a little easier to manage. You’ll need:
1.Soak your seeds. Rinse your seeds and soak them in a bowl of fresh water for 6 to 8 hours. This gets them off to a strong start.
2.Prepare your tray. While the seeds drain, lay your growing medium flat in the tray and moisten it thoroughly. You want it damp all the way through but not dripping.
3.Spread and cover. Spread the soaked seeds in a single even layer across the damp medium. Mist them lightly, then place a light weighted object or empty tray on top. That gentle pressure encourages strong downward root growth and helps the seed hulls release naturally.
4.Rinse regularly. After 2 to 3 days, the sprouts will start pushing the cover up. Remove it and begin misting or rinsing the seeds thoroughly once or twice a day to keep the roots hydrated. If your tray has a bottom reservoir, add about ¼ inch of water so the roots can drink without sitting in stagnant water.
5.Move to the light. Place your tray in a spot with bright indirect sunlight. The shoots will green up quickly once they get some light.
6.Harvest. Soilless sunflower sprouts are typically ready in 7 to 10 days. Snip the stems just above the growing medium and enjoy right away, or store in the fridge for up to 14 days!
Soil is the most forgiving growing medium for sunflower sprouts and tends to produce strong, hearty shoots. Here’s everything you need to get started:
1.Soak your seeds. Measure out about ⅔ cup of seeds for a 10×10 tray, rinse them well and soak them in a bowl of fresh water for 6 to 8 hours (overnight works great). This softens the hull and jump-starts germination.
2.Prepare your tray. Fill the drainage tray with 1 to 1½ inches of soil. Level it out, pat it down gently and moisten it thoroughly with your spray bottle.
3.Spread your seeds. Drain and rinse your soaked seeds, then scatter them evenly across the surface of the soil in a single dense layer. Press them down lightly for good soil contact and give them a final gentle misting.
4.Start the blackout phase. Cover the seeded tray with your solid tray and place the light weight on top. This keeps things dark and humid—exactly the environment sunflower seeds need to develop strong roots. Keep the setup somewhere warm for 3 to 4 days, checking daily to make sure the soil stays moist.
5.Let there be light. Around day 3 or 4, you’ll notice the sprouts starting to push the cover tray upward. Remove the weight and lid and move your tray to a bright spot with indirect sunlight. Don’t be surprised if they look pale or yellow at first! Within 2 to 3 days, they’ll turn a vibrant, healthy green.
6.Water daily. Bottom watering works best here: pour a small amount of water into the solid tray and let the soil soak it up from below. This keeps the stems dry and helps prevent mold.
7.Harvest. Your sunflower sprouts will be ready in 8 to 12 days. Using clean scissors, snip the shoots just above the soil line and rinse them well. Store extras unwashed in a paper towel-lined container, and use them in your favorite recipes.
